The big girl bed that Ava is now sleeping in has become more of a punishment for Dave and I than a milestone in her life. She has adapted quite well to the going to bed part. She lays down and within minutes she is fast asleep. Sounds good right? No. Not at all. She goes to sleep just fine, it's staying asleep that has become cumbersome.
5 AM every morning we have a visitor who is very awake and alert and doesn't want to go back to sleep. "I no like my bed," she mutters. Oh well, that is where you sleep go back and come back in 2 hours. If only it was that easy.
And now the little munchkin has discovered that her new found freedom also allows her private access to her closet, her drawers, and all of her toys in her room. It looks like a tiny blizzard swept through her room. Yea more work for me...as if I didn't have enough stuff to pick up during the day.
Ok so I know that I'm ranting. She's 2 years old. Yeah I got that. I know this is all part of her developmental process and it is age appropriate. Yeah whatever. It's a stage...just stick with it. It will pass and she will begin some other annoying habit... blah blah blah. My mom is enjoying the payback for all the tricks I played on her as a kid. She keeps reminding me of this fact weekly. "Wait until she gets her period," she chants as she mocks me.
So getting back to my point- nap time isn't going so well at my house and neither is our ability to sleep past 5 AM on most mornings.

That Was FAST
I thought this sleeping arrangement was going to take longer to adjust to but Ava is doing great. Yesterday's nap went smoothly and without any crying. Last night she went to bed and eeked out a whimper as I was leaving the room but within 10 minutes she was asleep and snoring. Yea Ava!
This morning she was up at 5:45 am which wasn't exactly wonderful but I'll take it. Everyone had a full night's sleep and that's what is most important. I now feel confident that I can put the crib in the garage instead of storing it under our bed and make room for something else under our bed.

Relief
After the afternoon nap that began pretty hectic but ended up with good results Dave and I were hoping Ava would go to bed last night with at least similar results and potentially a full nights sleep.
At 8pm I announced it was bed time and Ava and Olivia ran up the stairs to have their teeth brushed. Once they were finished we tucked Olivia into her bed, said her prayers, and gave her kisses. Next up- Ava. I could see this going either way so I was practicing patience and deep breathing. Dave had to finish working so it was up to me to make this happen.
Ava hopped right into her bed and lined up all of her babies while clutching her lovey. In went the thumb and I kissed her goodnight. I told her I was going to my room and I'd come back and check on her in 5 minutes. As I turned my back and headed quickly for the door I was expecting the wailing to begin. Huh. I had made it to my room without any crying. That's weird I thought but it will happen any minute...
...or maybe not.
10 minutes later I went to check on Ava and she was snuggled in her bed sucking her thumb surrounded by her stuffed animal family. I gave her a kiss and told her I would come back in 5 more minutes and check on her again. About 30 minutes later I entered her room and found her snoring away like a big girl with her lovey tightly gripped in her fist. She made it to sleep in her big girl bed all by herself. I was and am very proud of her. She slept the entire night without waking up. Best of all- WE slept the entire night without waking up at all. What a relief.

We are not giving up...
yet. Together we can conquer this bed. Go team go.
Yeah even I can't swallow that down. Ava hardly slept last night. Dave hardly slept last night. I slept like a baby thank you very much. My nights dealing with Ava will start tomorrow night when Dave starts teaching again. Lucky him.
Today we took the girls out to Pump It Up for an hour and a half, out for pizza afterward, and then to the backyard to play on the swings to eek out the last tiny little bit of energy they just might have stored up in their every growing bodies. You'd think Ava would be exhausted. Nope.
Ava was put down for her nap at her normal time. She was resting in her bed so I left the room and ten minutes later she was in the hallway. How can she still be awake? If given the opportunity Dave would have been asleep hours ago. So now she's in her room calling for her daddy and angry that she is left in her room by herself.
This was very hard for me to go through getting Olivia to sleep in her bed after the switch from the crib but it was always a blessing that at night she never got out of her bed. Only at nap time did she protest. So as with Ava a little crying will eventually go a long way. As for my nerves and my mental status... we'll see. As for our desire for even more kids...diminishing by the minute.
***Only 1 LONG hour later we have:

Success!!! Way to go Ava!!!

Second night... not so good
Well I'd like to write that last night was fabulous and that Ava laid right down on her bed and went to sleep but then I'd be lying. It was a little more like living in a hell house. She took her afternoon nap just fine, maybe a little bit too fine. I think she may have slept for at least 3 hours which in Avaland is a bit too much and made going to bed at her regular time a nightmare.
Ok so you live and learn right? God I hope so or Dave and I will be living on very little sleep for awhile and our sex life will be dwindled down to nooners. Not that I'm complaining about a nooner or anything but he's only home 2 afternoons a week if you catch my drift.
We will try again tonight with Ava and hopefully we will have better results. We know this is a new and challenging time for her and want things to go as smoothly as possible. At times it's hard for us to not get so frustrated and throw in the towel and get the crib back out but patience will eventually help us overcome our issues and help her build her own self-confidence.
